Anyone else on empyre been writing as Patrick
describes? I'm *very* interested in academic writing
that really does explore this, rather than treat links
as singular already defined and evacuated points of
connection.

Hi Adrian.

Hope I can contribute something to your reply (and to
the thread being developed  by Patrick Lichty more
generally) and subsequent 'plea' ...re. academic
writing and hypertextuality. 

The chance of exploring textuality through the mixture
of forms (image, text, navigation) was part of the
impetus behind the piece  we (>acknowledging my
collaborator Leon Meyer - who was responsible for 
activating my text accordingly through the
interactivity design) had published  last year in
Media-Culture. The idea was to develop a
relational-sensitivity that 'connected' a
constellation of elements rather a fixed 'linkage' of
points, being able to bring a variety of concepts into
relationship through likeness/reference/compatibility
while still  motivating/encouraging/endorsing a
narrative trajectory.

topic - an extrapolation of a range of ideas around
which my curatorial exhibition project, The Synthetic
Image, revolved - and provides the entry to the

I found it a very invigorating challenge (I'm not
speaking of the technicalities of scripting, rather
the techniques of exposition and articulation).
Personally, I sensed that the "way" I tend to think
was actually accomodated by the form... don't know if
you intuitively may feel the same? It seems to
accomodate/encourage much more of a
collage-sensibility, but also a sort of way to
emphasise the not just literal linkages but also the
more "allusive"connections between entities (ideas,
resonances, trains-of-thought)... reading the
"betweens" of the lines as it were.
